Abstract
The COVID-19 outbreak has radically changed the dynamics of international business, thus being the main factor that created turbulence in Australia’s foreign trade and investment with its major partners. This research report reviews these effects using key sectors and economic indicators data that has been obtained from January to the month of June in the year 2020. Throughout the report, the findings reveal how the initial level of exposure and preparedness or otherwise of different industries determined the impact and overall result for Australia’s economy. For instance, seafood production was affected in a manner that either positively or negatively depending on the market; the live and fresh exporting market drastically declined in value due to the disruption in continuity while the domestic retail and takeaway enjoyed increased demand. Connecting them to theories of international trade and investment, supply chain disruption, shifts in the customer’s buying behaviour, and changes in trade policies.
The support of the government plays a huge role in avoiding some constraints, strengthening the resistance, and future recovery. For students of economic development, the report offers the theoretical application of the frameworks to the practical impact of a pandemic on Australia’s trade and investment relationship, with recommendations for future policy options based on the social structures of enhancing economic stability and solidarity. This paper adds knowledge about how global health risks and shocks affect international relationships and economic cooperation, stressing that stronger post-crisis policy measures are essential to address them.
